GOING FIRST: BLOG
OUR WHY
One evening as we were leaving campus, we both received an email confirming our attendance at an upcoming networking event. Simultaneously, we both looked at one another with wide eyes. After exhausting our wardrobe attending networking events earlier in the week, the countdown was on. We had about 48 hours to find another "business professional" option as we knew we'd be shaking hands with familiar faces we'd encountered earlier in the week.
As we discussed squeezing in a trip to the mall, one of us noted that it felt like there was a handbook somewhere that we had never received. You can rent books, your tuition includes subscriptions to a number of invaluable digital resources, you should always have multiple business professional clothing options on-hand . . . these were just some of the lessons we were learning as we were wading into our first semester of law school as first-generation students.
Our conversations continued and we committed to creating a list of things we think all first-gen law school students should know before they go. The list became "Our First Five." Five weeks. Five posts with five tips each. Five minute read. Our First Five became the "Going First" blog.
We hope that this platform will become the first stop for first-gen law school students.
Here’s to going first. Here’s to FirstGen5.

As a first-generation college and law student, I experienced many of the hurdles that come with going first in my family. Prior to law school, I spent hours reading books to gain insight into the law school experience and to make the unknown journey seem familiar.
I hope that FirstGen5 serves as a platform for you to capture advice based on our personal experiences while sharing pieces of your own experiences.

I'm glad you found us. Here's the truth: Going first wasn't necessarily easy for me. But, I made it through with the support of family, friends, and fellow first-gens. You will too!
